Why do all the kids in the house get away with hurting Jane physically and emotionally?
I think that the reason all the kids get away with hurting Jane is because everybody in the house hates Jane, even the maids. I also think that they get away with this is because there is nobody in the house who is willing to discipline the kids when they should be. The only person who gets punished is Jane for doing something so simple as reading because they hate having to take care of here and hate having her in the house.

I think that Jane gets abused because on some level everyone is grieving the lost of their father/husband and since Jane is not a part of their immediate family they use her as an outlet for their built up anger. Jane was taken care of really well before her uncle died, but after he is gone she is treated like a punching bag for whoever to hit, whenever they feel like it is necessary.
