Why does John Reed believe that he is entitled to everything in the house?
When Jane had hid herself behind the red curtain to read, John came he yelled at her for reading the book. He rudely stated, "Now I'll teach you to rummage my book-shelves: for they are mine; all the house belongs to me, or will do in a few years" (Bronte 10). I don't understand why he thinks that every item in the house is going to be his. He shouldn't feel entitled to everything and he most definitely shouldn't be rude to Jane about reading a book that he will probably never read.

I agree with you that John Reed doesn't treat Jane fairly and he shouldn't feel entitled to the house. In the Victorian Era the boys were taught that they were superior to women and when their parents were gone the estate would go to them. John, with no compassion, seems like he is ready for his mother to be gone already so everything will be his.
