Do you believe the room Jane Eyre was locked in represented hell?
Early on in this novel, when Jane Eyre called John Reed a "Wicked and cruel boy!" (Bronte 10). When this happens she is dragged away to a red room. This red, I believe represents hell and the devil. Even later when in the red room Miss Abbot says "God will punish her: he might strike her dead in the midst of her tantrums, and then were would she go?" (Bronte 12). This shows the religious imagery in this novel and how deeply religion affects those in the book.

Yes, because Jane had mental encounters with that room from the past, in which she did not remember good things happening in that room. The red room makes Jane go crazy and start seeing and believing things that were not real. Therefore, being put in the red room was a living hell for Jane within her mind, because she could not control her negative thoughts and emotions and that is also why I think the red color of the room represents hell.
