Jane Eyre BBC Podcast

Pros:
They talked about the characters in depth. I was able to learn more about them like Jane herself and Mr. Brocklehurst. Along with the characters they said that her dad opened a school when he was only sixteen years old. It also convinced me more that this was an autobiography of Charlotte Bronte’s life. They talked about her life bit by bit and then compared how it was similar to the book and Jane. I liked hearing their different point of views when they talked about Mr. Rochester and St. John and both marriage proposals that Jane went through. They discussed the gothic theme quite a bit and talked about what from the book makes it gothic. Included in that was Bertha Mason and her gothic personality.

Cons:
Their accents distracted me. Sometimes they trailed on too long and got off topic. There was some distracting background sound and the two people tried to talk over each other sometimes. Some of the questions they asked were worded weird and confusing to understand. The guy asking questions asked them once or twice to move on from the topic they were talking about because they had other things to talk about.

Interesting Topics:
What are some things that make Jane Eyre an imperial gothic story? We don’t know much because they do not discuss the empire and colonial times often in the book other than what we would already know from that time period. There could have been so many biblical references toward the end of the book because Charlotte was reading the Bible while she was writing her book.

  1. I agree that this podcast shows us more about Bronte's life and it goes more into the possibility of Jane Eyre being an autobiography. Their accents were hard for me to understand some things and I thought that they rambled on about some topics for too long as well.

  2. I agree with you that the topics were drawn out and off topic. I also heard the heavy breathing in the background at times. I like how you brought up the autobiography aspect, I also felt like the podcast gave multiple examples of how it could be an autobiography.

  3. I also liked that they talked about the characters in depth and that we learned even more about how they are supposed to be portrayed. They did use lots of similar things from Bronte's actual life in the novel. As well as them drawing things on for too long, they also had quite a few unfinished thoughts that I wish they would've finished.

  4. I agree that the guy interrupted the talking to move onto a different topic which meant the listener didn't get the full idea of what was being talked about. I like how you mentioned the characters. They talked about the characters more in depth, which I found really helpful because the listener learns more about the individual characters.

  5. I agree that their accents were distracting at times and it was also difficult to follow along at some points because the speakers talked over each other at some points. I also noticed that they said "umm" a lot and that was also distracting. I also thought it was interesting to learn more about the characters in depth and to see how much the novel connects with Bronte's life.
