Why does Jane Eyre deny her love for Mr Rochester?

When Mr. Rochester returns home to Thornfield Hall he is short-tempered and abrupt. After a while, Mr. Rochester finds Jane to be a great person to converse with. He tells her stories that he hasn't told others and she starts to fall for him. I believe that she denies her love for him because she is 18 and he is near 40. Jane drew a picture of herself and another beautiful woman that she thinks would be a better match for him. "Whenever, in the future, you should chance to fancy Mr. Rochester thinks well of you, take out these two pictures and compare them" (Bronte 163). Jane is disciplining herself to think that she is not good enough for Mr. Rochester. I think that she believes that with her being a lowly teacher, there is no way he would fall in love with her.

  1. I agree that Jane is taking into account their age differences and I think she doesn't give herself enough credit for what she is capable of. I also believe that she might be thinking it would be wrong to fall in love with her master/boss. I don't think she is letting herself fall for Mr. Rochester.

  2. I agree with Lauren's previous comment about how she won't allow herself to fall in love with Mr. Rochester. Especially since he is older, Jane might be more cautious about the situation along with the fact that he is her supervisor. I don't think Jane believes that Mr. Rochester would ever like her so she doesn't act on her feelings.
