I debated for a long time what to use for this week's teacher post. Should I talk about the author, the themes, or what is happening in the story? Maybe I should just find something related to literature and reading. I decided to search TED Talks, and when I watched the video below and heard her mention Jane Eyre, I knew I had struck gold.
In my last post, I gave the option to check out a link about lessons readers can learn from this book. Although many students viewed the site, I am using it to connect to this post as well. Below are the steps involved to complete this assignment.
- Watch the TED Talk video on the right.
- Review the lessons in this book here.
- Consider all the books you have read.
- Choose one of the books you read, and make a list of lessons from it.
- In your comment do this:
- Share your list of lessons from the book you chose.
- Pick one of the lessons on your list and write a paragraph explaining how the book taught this lesson.
Red Queen series-
ReplyDelete1. tell your loved ones you care about them when you have the chance
2. don't trust everyone
3. believe in yourself
4. know your abilities
5. there is more to the world than we know
Don't trust everyone-
Throughout the Red Queen series Mare puts her trust in many people that let her down. In the first book Mare falls in love with Maven and later learns that the person she fell in love with doesn't exist. Maven turned out to be an evil, self absorbed, power seeking jerk and had the plan to draw Mare to this false person he pretended to be. At the same time she is falling in love with Maven's false character, Mare sends his brother Cal vibes that she has feelings for him as well. In the end Maven ends up hurting Mare very badly when she finds out what kind of person he truly is and Cal is hurt when he finds out Mare had really been in love with his brother.
The Hunger Games-
ReplyDelete1. Friendship will last forever
2. Kindness can change lives
3. Trusting others is hard sometimes
4. Sacrifice for the ones you love
5. Believe in yourself
Friendship will last forever- The first example of this in the book is when she leaves her best friend Gale back in District 12. She is gone for a long period of time without seeing him. She trusts him to take care of her family and while she is away he becomes saddened with her for falling in love with Peeta when he obviously loves her. The second example of how friendship lasts forever is when Katniss befriends Rue. Their friendship is a short one since they meet in the hunger games and Rue ends up passing away. After her death, Katniss keeps the memory of her friend alive, even if she is not physically there.
Throne of Glass series
ReplyDelete1. You're past does not define who you are.
2. You choose who your family is.
3. Not everyone is who they say they are.
4. Love can be found in the darkest of times.
5. A girl can be stronger than a man.
Love can be found in the darkest of times-
In the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas, the first part where this idea is present is towards the end of the second book and throughout the third book. Celaena was sent away to a new country by Chaol, someone she thought had cared about her. Once she reaches the new country, she runs into Rowan and, even as her relationship with Chaol crumbles to dust and the truth about her kingdom is revealed, Celaena forms a close bond with Rowan.
Towards the end of the fifth book in the series, the reader feels their heart break into a million pieces when Celaena offers herself to the evil queen for torture to save her friends. This theme comes back into play once Rowan discovers his best friend and wife has been taken. He promises that he will get her back, even if he dies trying. Even as the world is falling apart, the love these two characters have for each other trumps all of the darkness within this book.

The CIA has known about his abilities long before Jackson did. This puts Jackson in a weird place because he no longer knows who his enemy is and who he can trust. The only way he can get back to Holly is to trust one of the two sides and he is at a loss for which one to pick. This is exactly why you should always know who your allies are and who your enemies are.
Shatter Me series:
ReplyDelete1. Friends matter
2. You're stronger than you think
3. Everything is not always as it seems
4. People do stupid things
5. Don't take anything for granted
Everything is not always as it seems:
In the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi, Juliette had a habit of seeing the world through a fixed point of view that was created from other people's opinions. This narrowed perception results in her forming incorrect opinions about the people and circumstances around her. For example, Juliette believes that Warner was a terrible person who only wanted to use her in order to torture people and she only thought this because she was told so. Later on, however, it becomes apparent to her that Warner isn't ruthless like she once believed and how her first impression of him clouded her from seeing who he truly is.
Mechanica:

2. Friends are important
3. You don't need a prince charming

You don't need a prince charming:
In the book Mechanica, by Betsy Cornwell, the story faces a Cinderella theme. Nicolette, the main character, realizes that she doesn't need a prince charming to protect her. Prince Christopher offered Nicolette the lifestyle most women would kill for. She struck him down because she knew it wasn't true love and she could take care of herself. Instead, she becomes a rich, independent mechanic. Thus showing that women can take care of themselves and not all fairytales are the same.
The Lightning Thief:
ReplyDelete1. The world is full of monsters
2. People make sacrifices because of love
3. Don't be ashamed of who you are
4. Trust your friends
5. Things aren't always what they seem
People make sacrifices because of love:
In this book both of Percy's parents have to make sacrifices to protect Percy, even though he doesn't realize them untill later in the book. Percy's mother put up with a dirty, smelly, obnoxious man to protect Percy. The man's stench overshadowed Percy's scent. Doing this helped the mythical monsters to not know where Percy was located. Percy's dad had to leave Percy and his mom earlier in his life because he is a god. The gods are not allowed to have children and he had to leave to help hide his son from others. This book shows that our loved ones make many sacrifices for us to grow up and be successful in our lives.

Throughout this book, the Burpo family kept a positive attitude, even though they endured a lot of hardship. Although we cannot control what happens in our lives, if you have a good attitude about it, the end results are likely to be more positive. We choose what kind of attitude we want to have and this impacts how we think, speak, and feel. This book teaches us this important lesson by giving multiple examples of obstacles that the Burpo family faced and their reactions to it. Their family was really struggling but no matter how difficult things got, they kept on going and maintained a positive attitude throughout this rough patch in their lives.

Even though Lena's mom still loves her children, she must make the decision because love with men is not allowed. This is just like the real world.
