Why did Mr. Rochester act like he didn't know who Thornfield belonged to when he met Jane on Hay Lane?

When Mr. Rochester and Jane met for the first time Mr. Rochester asked Jane about Thornfield saying, "Whose house is it?. . . Do you know Mr. Rochester?. . . Can you tell me where he is?" (Bronte 116). I think Mr. Rochester acted as a stranger to Thornfield to see how loyal Jane was. I believe he wanted to see how she treated him without her knowing that he was the master of Thornfield.

  1. I agree that Mr. Rochester wanted to see how loyal Jane was to Thornfield. He asked Jane a lot of questions regarding Thornfield and Mr. Rochester, who he pretended was not him. I think it was just Mr. Rochester getting to know Jane without actually revealing who he was.
