GOW Family

In the book Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, there are so many examples of family throughout the book.  The way I would define family is people who you can count on for anything and people who really truly care about you.  According to Ma Joad family cannot get split apart or the world will pretty much end.  Back in that era, the women would look to the men to see how they could react to the certain situation.  The children would look at the mothers to see how they should react.  The father set the mood for the whole family back then.  Another point I would make is about how many times Ma said that family is the most important thing in the world, without family, they would have nothing.  I would also give some examples of how the family started to fall apart after Noah left.  After Noah left one main event happened that broke the family up even more than already, granma died.  A short while after they got to California Connie left and was nowhere to be found, and Casy got arrested.  These events all happened after Noah had left the family and maybe if he would've stayed together some of those things wouldn't have happened.

  1. I agree, Ma thinks that family is the most important thing in her life and all she wants is to keep her family together. However, since leaving Oklahoma they have been slowly falling apart from each other. Once Grandpa died everything started falling down hill, because next it was Noah, and soon after Granma was gone too. As reader's we can never know what might have happened if one scene never happened in the book, but it is safe to say that nothing good has really happened to them since they packed up and left for California.

  2. I agree with your definition of family and how every member of the family should care for one another. Even though Ma does play a big role in keeping the family together and she wants everyone to stay together, in the book when she found out Noah was gone she didn't have a huge reaction. Also, the night that Grandma died she informed no one of it. So in a way I feel that Ma isn't trying to keep their family together she is just trying to take care of the members that are still there.

  3. I agree with your reasoning, and I think that family is the most important thing to Ma. I like your thinking about the chain reaction of when Noah left then all the other bad things wouldn't have happened to the Joad family. The surprising thing was that Ma didn't track down Noah and made him come the rest of the way to California. She just let him make the decision to stay on his own and the family moved on without him.

  4. I agree with your definition of family. I think that family at this point in time was very necessary for them to stick together. When the Wilson's car had broken down she didn't want to leave Tom and Al behind to get the parts so they stayed. Also, when she found out that Noah was going to stay at the river and not go with them she didn't tell the rest of the family. I think that Ma wants to make the family stay together for as long as possible.
