GOW Family

In the book Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, the reader can learn about the Joads family and how they help each other by sticking together. The first example of family is when Joad first comes home after he got out of prison and his Pa and Ma greet him excitedly. Then don't hold Tom's actions against him because they know he was just trying to protect himself. A second example is when the Joad's were just about ready to leave for California and Grandpa decided he didn't want to go anymore. He wanted to stay back like Muley on their farm until he died. The Joads did not want to separate, so they gave grandpa some coffee with sleep syrup hidden inside and soon he fell asleep. Once he was out they were able to put him in the car and he would be traveling to California with them. They didn't want to leave anyone behind. Another example of family is when the Joads were having car problems and they were forced to stop. They looked in the car and realized they needed some new parts. Tom's plan was for a few of the men to stay back and help fix the car while the ladies and others transfer to the truck and continue the journey to California. He promised them they would all soon meet up. Ma was not going to let this happen. Her new plan was that she stay back with the men and the others would go to the nearest house to rest. Once the car was fixed they would all meet at the house, rest, and then continue the journey. The Joads are a kind and giving family. They don't want to abandon each other and they stick up for each other.

  1. Grapes of Wrath has several examples of family, and they all seem to focus around not wanting to be apart form one another. As you said, Ma and Pa were excited to see Tom arrive home because they hated him being away, and then later on Ma didn't like the idea of leaving Tom behind even if it was to fix the car and catch up a few hours later. She didn't want it. Ma wanted her family to stay together and every time someone leaves, she gets extremely upset.

  2. There are many examples of family found throughout Grapes of Wrath. The main ones that stand out to me are when Tom first arrives and decides to leave with his family. Tom is willing to risk being caught and taken back to prison to be with his family. He is taking a huge risk, but to him it is worth it to be with his family. Another example I think is important to family is when Ma doesn't tell anyone about Grandma's death. She knows how important it is that the family makes it to California, so Ma keeps quiet about Grandma's death until they make it into California. Ma is looking out for the well being of the family and that is why she doesn't say anything. There are a lot of other examples of family throughout this novel, but these ones really stuck out to me while I was reading.
