GOW and Migrant Workers
During the middle of the great depression and the Dust Bowl, many families were forced to move west in search of jobs. This was caused by the Banks taking control of family farms and surrounding areas of land by bowl-dozing over the families house so they could plant cotton. Along with this many families saw pamphlets that were asking for workers in California. This was misleading as they were only a couple hundred jobs but were seen by thousands of people. This caused there to be a mass migration of people racing for the chance of getting a job working in California. Along the way many of the families sold all of their belongings that they couldn't take with them for very cheap. They also couldn’t find places to get food or to clean themselves. They were also faced with terrible discrimination by the people who lived in the west before they had come there by calling them names such as Okie’s and many others. This was brought forward because many of the migrant workers would work for less than the original workers. This outraged them as many of them lost their job due to them taking less wage and working longer hours than the previous workers. These are just some of the hardships that the migrant workers faced while migrating west to find jobs.
