Family in Grapes Of Wrath

There are many examples of the theme of family throughout the novel Grapes of Wrath. One of these examples includes how the family does not let Granpa stay home. He begs and begs to stay home, but his family forces him to come along, as family always stays together. In this era, families were extremely important. Blood was everything and this book exemplifies that. Another point I would dive in to would be how the family sticks together throughout the hardships of the travels. Some of these hardships include the deaths of family members such as Granpa and Granma. These deaths were hard for the family to come to terms with, but when a family is together, nothing can get in their way. Another example is how the family starts to break apart after Noah is no longer with them. This shows how they care about him, and him leaving is extremely hard for everyone, as he was family.

  1. Wyatt, stellar job here. There are so many examples of family found throughout Grapes of Wrath. The main ones that stand out to me are when Tom first arrives and decides to leave with his family. Tom is willing to risk being caught and taken back to prison to be with his family. He is taking a huge risk, but to him it is worth it to be with his family. Another example I think is important to family is when Ma doesn't tell anyone about Grandma's death. She knows how important it is that the family makes it to California, so Ma keeps quiet about Grandma's death until they make it into California. Ma is looking out for the well being of the family and that is why she doesn't say anything. Family is everything.
