Why does John Reed feel the need to bully Jane?

John Reed most likely has learned from those around him that it is okay to harass others who don't follow the social 'norms.' In the Victorian era, women were supposed to be simpleminded, fragile ladies who obeyed all male authority. I believe that John Reed feels threatened by Jane because she is headstrong and intelligent. John was taken out of school because of his "delicate health" when really he was just overweight. Being cooped up in the house, I assume he sees that his mother dislikes Jane and decides that he can beat her up without getting in trouble.

  1. I agree that John doesn't like how Jane is intelligent and strong. I feel he is jealous of how she is different than others and feels the need bully her and make her feel bad for it.

  2. I agree that John sees it as normal to treat people, especially women, who don't follow the social norms so terribly. I also think his actions might be influenced by the way his mother treats Jane Eyre. If his mother is doing it, John might think it fine to treat Jane so cruelly and there will be no consequence to his actions.
