Why do you feel John is so abusive and violent to Jane?
I don't know much about the story so far but if I had to guess, I would say John is jealous of her. Jane is obviously smart and a quiet girl and I think John doesn't like how she acts. Jane says, "He bullied and punished me; not two or three times in the week, nor once or twice in the day, but continually" (Bronte 9). I feel he has some reason to hate her because John abuses Jane every day and she absolutely fears him.

I agree that John is jealous of Jane and he knows that he won't get in trouble from the adults. I also believe that he bullies Jane for the feeling of power.
ReplyDeleteI feel that John is abusive to Jane because he feels like she is just a leech in their family as she is not one of his siblings and she doesn't do anything around the house to earn what she is given.
ReplyDeleteI personally feel that John has implemented in his mind how beneath her she is. This allows for him to justify his cruel nature, the same way the "Christian" plantation owners could justify having slaves in the early days of the United States.
