When John bullies Jane all of the women take it out on Jane. I get that Mrs. Reed would take John's side because he is her son, but why would Bessie and Abbot side with him over Jane?
Bessie and Abbot might be taking John's side just to please Mrs. Reed. At some points in the book it feels like they are being mean to Jane just because their masters are mean to Jane.
I feel that Bessie and Abbot take John's side because they are afraid that he might bully them as well if they went with Jane. After seeing how John acts, I can see how the other girls don't want that to happen to them as well.
