Why do the ladies at the party not acknowledge Jane when she walks in?

When Adele and Jane walk into the dance with the other ladies, only a few of them nod their heads and acknowledge their entrance.  Jane and Adele are children and the older ladies did not show any interest in children being at their parties.  They would rather talk to their friends rather than talking to the children.  Since Jane is a governess, her social status is lower than theirs.  She is also wearing a plain gray and black dress that is not very fancy.

  1. I believe it is because of Jane's low status. they all view her as unimportant and lower than them selves because of money and social status. to the she nothing more than the help or more specifically a servant. It is also just part of the era, rich upper class people were rarely ever associated with those socially beneath them.
